In a large bowl mix together the flour, salt, sugar and suet, then add the egg and milk and mix well. Add the jam to bottom of the pudding basin and then transfer the rest of the mixture. Add tin foil to the top of the basin and make sure it is tight. Stand the basin in a pan with water halfway up the sides and cover with a tight fitting lid. Bring to the boil and then simmer for about 2 hours (topping up with boiling water if needed).
